Getting a new website built is exciting. But if you’ve never done it before, the process can feel like a bit of a mystery. What happens first? How long does it take? What do you actually need to do?
This post walks you through the web design process from start to finish so you know exactly what to expect before we ever get started. No surprises, no confusion. Just a clear picture of how a website goes from idea to live.
Step 1: The Discovery Call and Intake Process
Before anything gets designed or built, we talk. The discovery call is where we learn everything we need to know about your business. Your goals, your audience, what you like and don’t like, and what you need your website to do.
You’ll also fill out an intake form so we have all the details in one place before the project kicks off. The more information you share upfront, the smoother the whole process goes.
Think of the discovery call as the foundation. Everything that gets built after this point is based on what we uncover here.
Step 2: The Mockup and Design Phase
Once we have everything we need, we get to work on the design. This is where your website starts to take shape visually. We’ll create a mockup that shows you exactly what your site will look like before a single line of code is written.
You’ll review the mockup and share your feedback. We’ll go back and forth until the design feels right and you’re happy with it. Nothing moves to development until you’ve given the green light.
This phase is also where we nail down your colors, fonts, and overall look and feel. If you already have branding in place, we’ll work with it. If you’re starting from scratch, we’ll figure it out together.
Step 3: Development and Build Phase
Once the design is approved, we start building. This is where the mockup becomes a real, functioning website. We build every site using a clean, efficient code stack that keeps things fast, accessible, and easy to manage down the road.
This phase happens mostly behind the scenes on your end. You won’t have a lot to do here, which is intentional. While we’re building, we’re also making sure every page is optimized for speed, mobile responsiveness, and SEO so the site is ready to perform from day one.
We’ll keep you updated as the build progresses so you’re never left wondering where things stand.
Step 4: Review, Revisions, and Approval
Once the build is complete, you’ll get a link to review the site before it goes live. This is your chance to go through every page, click every button, and make sure everything looks and works exactly the way you want it to.
If something needs to be tweaked, just let us know. Revisions are a normal part of the process and we want you to feel confident about every detail before we launch. We’ll work through any changes together until you’re completely satisfied.
Nothing goes live without your final approval. That’s a promise.
Step 5: Launch Day and What Comes After
Launch day is the fun part. Once everything is approved, we make the site live and your new website is officially out in the world.
But the relationship doesn’t end there. After launch, we’ll do a final check to make sure everything transferred over correctly and is functioning the way it should. If you’re on our website hosting and management plan, we’ll take it from there and keep your site secure, updated, and running smoothly every month.
If you ever have questions after launch or need small updates down the road, we’re here. You won’t be handed off to a support ticket queue or left to figure things out on your own.
What You’re Responsible For
A smooth web design process is a team effort. While we handle all the design, copy, and development work, there are a few things we’ll need from you along the way.
Before the project kicks off, you’ll need to provide your branding assets like your logo, brand colors, and any photos you want to use on the site.
During the project, your biggest job is to be responsive. When we send over the mockup for review or have questions that need answers, timely feedback keeps everything on track. Delays on the client side are the most common reason projects take longer than expected, so the more available you are, the faster we can get your site launched.
SEO Is Built Into the Process, Not Added Later
A lot of businesses don’t think about SEO until after their website is already built. By then, it’s much harder to fix. At LolaBella Digital, SEO isn’t an afterthought. It’s baked into every step of the process.
From the structure of your pages to the way your content is written, every decision we make has SEO in mind. We research the right keywords for your business, optimize each page before launch, and make sure your site is set up to get found in search results from day one.
You shouldn’t have to come back six months later to fix what should have been done right the first time. With us, it’s already done.
How a Structured Web Design Process Protects You
Working with a web designer without a clear process is a recipe for frustration. Missed deadlines, surprise costs, and a final product that looks nothing like what you imagined are all too common when there’s no structure in place.
A defined process keeps everyone on the same page from start to finish. You know what’s happening at every stage, what’s expected of you, and when to expect things back. There are no mystery phases or vague timelines. Just a clear, predictable path from kickoff to launch.
It also means you’re protected. Nothing moves forward without your approval, and the project isn’t considered finished until you’re satisfied with the result.
